Historically of late, however, visits by the Hawkeyes to play the Boilermakers in Purdue have not been going well. Since 2009, Iowa has one road win at Purdue. That was a 70-63 verdict on January 2, 2016.
In the three games played since at Purdue, the Boilermakers have walloped the Hawkeyes. They’ve won all three contests by double-digit numbers and by an average margin of 25 points per game.
Oddsmakers are anticipating that trend will continue. They are setting Purdue as the 11.5-point home favorite for Friday’s game. The Boilermakers are 4-1 against the spread as the home chalk this season.
Tipoff for this game at Mackey Complex is set for 9pm ET. The broadcast is being carried by the Big Ten Network.
Purdue Boilermakers Betting Trends
Boilermakers sophomore center Zach Edey has enjoyed four games this season where he’s been scoring a point a minute. For the season, Edey is averaging 35.9 points and 15.2 rebounds per 40 minutes. Over his last three games, Edey has 53 points, 16 rebounds and four blocked shots in just 55 minutes played.
Sophomore guard Jaden Ivey is averaging 15.4 points per game, 6.3 rebounds per game and 3.9 assists per game while shooting 52% from the field. He’s making 43.3% of his shots taken beyond the arc.
Purdue is #1 in the nation in offensive efficiency (121.5), #2 in field goal percentage (.545), 3-point percentage (.442), 2-point percentage (.617), scoring margin (28.3) and effective field goal percentage (.636). The Boilermakers are fifth in assists per game (19.7) and offensive rebound percentage (.413).
Purdue owns a 70-46 (.603) all-time record in Big Ten Conference openers. The Boilermakers are 11-5 (.688) under head coach Matt Painter.
Iowa Hawkeyes Betting Trends
The Hawkeyes beat Purdue 70-55 in last season’s Big Ten opener but that game was played at Iowa City. Iowa is 6-9 SU all-time against teams ranked #2 in the nation.
Hawkeyes sophomore forward Keegan Murray is one of three Big Ten players since the 2002-03 season with six consecutive 20-point games to start the season. Murray ranks first in the country in points per game (24.6), 49th in rebounds per game (8.9), and 46th in free throw percentage (.857).
The Hawkeyes lead the NCAA in assist/turnover ratio (2.28). They are third in the nation in scoring margin (+27.3) and fourth in the nation in offensive efficiency (118.1), turnovers per game (8.3). and free throw percentage (.810).
Hawkeyes vs Boilermakers Prediction
The Boilermakers are 7-0 for the first time since the 2015-16 season. Iowa is 7-0 for the first time since the 2013-14 season. The Hawkeyes (94.0 ppg) and Purdue (92.4 ppg) are 1-2 in the nation in scoring offense. Purdue is ranked #2 in the nation for the first time since 1988. The Boilermakers have never been #1.
It’s difficult to locate a weakness in this Boilermakers team so far this season. KenPom is rating Purdue as the nation’s #1 offense. Purdue is one of three teams in the NCAA shooting at least 50% from the field, 40% percent from 3-point range and 75% percent from the free throw line.
They’re coming into this game after whipping up on the Florida State Seminoles by a 28-point margin in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Purdue’s 1.37 points per possession against Florida State were the most the Seminoles have allowed in 20 years under head coach Leonard Hamilton.
It must be said that Iowa’s 7-0 launch to the season wasn’t expected. The Hawkeyes arrive in West Lafayette, Indiana off an up-and-down performance on the road against the Virginia Cavaliers in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge.
Racing to a 40-19 advantage over the Cavs, Iowa then gave it all up. Trailing with 30 seconds to play, the Hawkeyes eked out the victory on Joe Toussaint’s game-winning fall-away jumper with eight seconds on the clock.
This will be the 12th straight Iowa-Purdue game in which at least one team is ranked among the top 25.
Pick: Purdue Boilermakers -11.5 (-110)
