Mainz have rejected a big-money bid for Ivory Coast international Jean-Philippe Gbamin from an unnamed Premier League suitor, according to the club's sporting director.

Speaking to Bild, Rouven Schroeder confirmed that the Bundesliga side had received a significant offer from a Premier League club but have no intention of letting the 22-year-old leave.

"The good thing is we already received an extraordinary offer, but we turned it down," Schroeder began. "Jean-Philippe will stay."

Schroeder added that the offer received was more than the 28 million Euros that the club received from Borussia Dortmund for Abdou Diallo earlier this window.

"Jean-Philippe is not on the market," Schroeder added. "We too have some ambitions, and he's a big part of our plans for the new season."

Gbamin joined Mainz from Racing Club de Lens in 2016, signing a five-year contract, and started 29 Bundesliga matches last term.

He made his Ivory Coast debut in June 2017, having previously represented France up to U-21 level.
